'Magic Mike' Musical, Based on 2012 Film, Coming to Broadway Next Season
A musical version of Steven Soderbergh's 2012 film Magic Mike has been announced for the 2016-2017 Broadway season. Starring Hollywood icon Channing Tatum, the movie was based on the actor's real life experiences working as a dancer.
The motion picture's popularity helped spawn a big screen sequel, last year's Magic Mike XXL, also helmed by Soderbergh and Tatum. Longtime fans of Tatum will remember his breakthrough movie role as a hip-hop dancer in 2006's Step Up.
As reported by Playbill, the musical's exact opening date and location are yet to be determined. However, the production is well underway and currently slated to debut next season:
"A stage adaptation of Steven Soderbergh's film ... Written by Tom Kitt (music), Brian Yorkey (lyrics), Roberto Aguire-Sacasa (book). A private workshop was held April 2015 featuring Derek Klena and Taylor Louderman. Announced for 2016-17 season. Cast, opening date and theatre TBA."
The stage debut of Magic Mike will join other new Broadway-by-way-of-Hollywood productions in the works for the coming season. Stage versions of 1998's Oscar-winning Best Picture Shakespeare in Love and film classic Singin' in the Rain are also set to hit the Great White Way for 2016-2017.
It remains to be seen which Broadway actor will land the titular role of Channing Tatum's lead character in Magic Mike. Director Soderberg and the star actor closely collaborated on the picture in bringing Tatum's early dancing experiences to the silver screen. In an interview with The A.V. Club, Tatum characterized the directorial strengths of his film colleague Soderbergh:
"[Y]ou can't really genre-ize Soderbergh films. They're not comedies; they're not dramas; they're just sort of a Soderbergh-esque film that have all of it in it. It's all-encompassing. ... He really is like a study of individuals and behavior. He's a very cerebral person, but he also has a heart as well."
