'Hamilton' Swaps Elise Goldsberry for Mandy Gonzalez in Hip-Hop History Musical

The Hamilton casting news is coming fast and furious these days. It seems like every time we turn around a new cast member is announced!

The latest report is that actress Mandy Gonzalez, who originated the role of Nina Rosario in Hamilton visionary Lin-Manuel Miranda's 2008 Broadway breakthrough, In the Heights, will be replacing Elise Goldsberry as character Angelica Schuyler in the hit musical.

The role is based on real-life historical figure Angelica Church, née Schuyler, who was an 18th century "bourgeoisie Betty" as the sister of Alexander Hamilton's wife, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, and daughter to General Philip Schuyler of the Contintental Army.

As we previously reported on our sister site Classicalite, creator-writer-star Miranda recently dropped his Broadway lead role as the Founding Father to prepare for the show's West End production. Actor Joshua Henry was recently named to open the show's Chicago run as Aaron Burr.

Broadway.com chimed in on the news Monday, recalling Goldsberry's recent Hamilton Tony Awards win for Best Featured Actress in a Musical:

"It really does feel like Hamilton casting news is non-stop nowadays! Mandy Gonzalez will return to Broadway this October as Angelica Schuyler. She succeeds in demand Tony winner Renée Elise Goldsberry in the role; precise arrival and departure dates will be announced later."

Playbill piped in with some of Ms. Gonzalez's previous work:

"Gonzalez also starred as Elphaba in the Broadway production of Wicked. Other Broadway roles include Princess Amneris in Aida; Lennon; and Sarah in the original cast of Dance of the Vampires. The actress has performed with symphonies across the country and around the world, and is currently working on her first solo CD, set to release in 2017."
