Paint's Jon Cozart Shows the 'History of Classical Music' in New Viral Video

By Philip Trapp on Aug 18, 2016 03:18 PM EDT

A delightfully entertaining new viral video recounts the history of classical music in under five minutes. YouTube star Jon Cozart, who runs the channel Paint on the popular video website, takes viewers on a brief but hilarious journey through the saga of classical music's birth up to its present-day incarnations. Watch the informative YouTube video below!

The video was posted by Cozart on Monday and quickly gained traction among the Internet's more classically minded meme mavens. As reported by WQXR New York Public Radio, the amusingly educational clip presents a wobbly timeline but hits many major strong points:

[The] "a cappella video follow[s] the (loose) trajectory of classical music, from Hildegard von Bingen to John Williams. He takes a few liberties with the timeline (curiously Beethoven comes before Mozart and  Debussy follows George Gershwin), but what are a few historical details when the resulting arrangement mashes up Williams's Jurassic Park theme and Debussy's Clair de Lune so nicely?"

The video is the latest fascinating YouTube film attempting to illustrate classical music's colorful history in a short viral clip. Five years ago, classical pianist Grant Woolard made a musical history video of classical's background while displaying antiquated hairstyles from the applicable time period.

Although the whole of classical music's vast history includes many major sub-categories and divisions, including its namesake "Classical" period from roughly the years 1750 to 1820, classical music as an all-encompassing genre usually counts its timeline starting from the 11th Century.

If you like classical music but cat memes are more your thing, perhaps you'd prefer Classic FM's hilarious The entire history of classical music in cat gifs article, published earlier this month. This good-humored piece attempts a similar historical reenactment but done entirely with cat memes!
