David Bowie's Final Recordings Will See Release on 'Lazarus' Cast Album

By Philip Trapp on Sep 12, 2016 08:11 PM EDT

The last recordings completed by artist David Bowie before his death earlier this year will be made available on the forthcoming cast album from Bowie's Off-Broadway 2015 musical, Lazarus. The album will include cast versions and Bowie's original, unreleased cuts.

Lazarus first opened in late 2015 at Manhattan's New York Theatre Workshop. The musical was envisioned by Bowie (music and lyrics) and playwright Enda Walsh (book) as a spiritual sequel to David's 1976 film, The Man Who Fell to Earth, an adaptation of the novel by Walter Tevis.

As reported on Monday by rock mag Rolling Stone, the Lazarus cast recording will feature three songs performed by the actors as originally appeared in the play. In addition, the anticipated LP will also include those same three tracks in Bowie's original version recordings, unheard until now:

"The three tracks -- 'No Plan,' 'Killing a Little Time' and 'When I Met You' -- originally appeared in Bowie's musical Lazarus, where the production's cast performed them. Lazarus Cast Album's second disc features Bowie's own versions of these three tracks, recorded along with the same jazz troupe, led by saxophonist Donny McCaslin, that featured on Blackstar."

The Guardian detailed the musical's cast, as featured on the recording, and its musical director, Henry Hey, who worked with Bowie on penultimate studio album, The Next Day:

"The cast album was produced by director Henry Hey, who had previously worked with Bowie on The Next Day. It features vocals from Michael C. Hall, Sophia Anne Caruso, Cristin Milioti, Michael Esper and cast members, with a seven-piece house band ... who formed for the New York run."

David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, just two days after the release of his last album, Blackstar, and his 69th birthday. Bowie passed away due to a previously undisclosed battle with liver cancer.
