Music for Social Change: Classical Movements & Yale School of Music Launch 'Winds Without Borders' Cultural Diplomacy Initiative

By Philip Trapp on Dec 16, 2016 09:54 PM EST

Classical touring company Classical Movements has teamed up with the Yale School of Music to launch the "Winds Without Borders" cultural diplomacy initiative. The altruistic enterprise offers wind, brass and percussion players an unparalleled opportunity to perform in Germany under the direction of Yale professor and Director of Bands, Thomas C. Duffy.

The aim of the special initiative is for the agglomerated ensemble to perform in Deutschland for refugees living in German camps. The tour of German refugee havens will begin in June 2017.

Per a press release, as reported by Musical America, Classical Movements founder Neeta Helms spoke of music's palliative power, especially in regard to personal displacement situations:

"For decades, Classical Movements has used the universal language of music to reach beyond boundaries, working tirelessly to share its powerful ability to provide transformative and healing experiences for people around the world. Under the present circumstances, we are grateful to bring the gift of music to a group of remarkable individuals, who have been forced to flee their homeland, separated from the comfort of their families and torn from the lives they once knew. Together with Maestro Duffy, we are honored to be able to offer these refugees the sound of hope during a time of discord."

Rhinegold's Classical Music magazine outlined certain travel specifics of "Winds Without Borders", by means of press release information specifically provided to them by Classical Movements:

"The ten-day, eight-night tour will take place during the last few weeks of June 2017. It will begin in Berlin and continue to two additional cities, most likely Dresden and Düsseldorf; however, due to the constantly changing nature of the refugee situation, the exact cities and dates will be determined at a later date."
