Art Exhibit In New Hampshire Tells The Story Of Transgender Men And Women

A new art exhibit focusing on the experiences of transgender men and women is now open to the public in New Hampshire. Each art piece in the exhibit tells different stories of being a transgender. For the person behind the exhibit, this is a great opportunity for all people to know what transgender people are going through.

The art exhibit titled "This is What TRANS Feels Like" is co-created by Jeff Kramer. According to him, the exhibit is a good way to educate the public regarding the gender roles in the society. As reported by NH1, the art exhibit is a way for people to understand that these roles can change.

The local artists shared their own views and experiences with their paintings, proses, photos and other forms of art. These artists have different stories of their own, but they all unite in telling the world the reality of becoming a transgender.

As for one artist, Christy Hegarty, she participated in the art exhibit not because she is a transgender. Hegarty told her own story in the exhibit based on her experience raising her 11-year old transgender daughter. More than anything else, becoming aware and educated about her daughter's identity is the best part of raising her child.

Hegarty's daughter began expressing her gender by the age of 4, as she was seen to prefer girls' dresses. Since then, her family has become more active in supporting the LGBT community, which led her now to participate in the New Hampshire art exhibit.

"When I reflect on what trans means to me, I choose to focus on the positive," Hagerty said. "And I feel like there are so many positives and are so many gifts that come from raising our daughter."

Meanwhile, Chloe Lacasse told her unique story of transformation to a transgender woman by the means of a poem and a photo collection titled "Red Lips." Lacasse recounted her earlier days with the Portland Press Herald, when she began to find out who she really is. At first, she hated herself for what she has become. Little by little, she learned that there is more to like and love in this beautiful transition.

"This is What TRANS Feels Like" art exhibit is made possible by Freedom New Hampshire in partnership with the New Hampshire chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and Rights and Democracy. The exhibit is open until Feb. 14.
