The first Canadian to play bass trombone in a US orchestra, Murray Crewe has passed away. The Pittsburgh Symphony and trombonist across America are mourning his passing.

According to Slipped Disc, Murray Crewe has passed away this weekend. He is the bass trombone of the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1993 to 2016.

There will be tributes, videos, and quotes remembering the career of Murray for the entire week according to the Last Row Music. Many expressed their condolences on Facebook posting photos of Murray and remembering their moments with him.

He was remembered as the most fun-loving man. They described Murray with a big heart, big sound, deep and spiritual person filled with love for life and compassion for others, never seemed to seek the spotlight and let his playing do his talking.

Murray began his brass trombone studies at the University of British Columbia. He went to Chicago after he completed his degree, to continue his studies with members of the Chicago Symphony low brass section.

Crewe became the bass trombonist of the Utah Symphony in 1987. During the audition he had met a problem, his airline had lost his bass trombone in result he had to borrow a horn but despite that, he still won that audition.

That success made him the first Canadian to win major American orchestra bass trombone position. After two years with Utah, Murray joined the Toronto Symphony, a position he held for four years.

He won an audition for bass trombone in the Pittsburgh Symphony. Because of Lorin Maazel, André Previn, Mariss Jansons, and Manfred Honeck, the brass section began to reach new heights.

He became a well-known teacher at both Carnegie Mellon University and Duquesne University. Numerous students that were under him have gone on to win orchestra and teaching positions throughout the world.

Murray lived in Pittsburgh with his wife Linda, and they had two children, Ralph and Emilie.
