On a commercial break for the 89th annual Academy Awards, Netflix showed off the first teaser trailer for Will Smith and Joel Edgerton's upcoming film, "Bright." Netflix invested a sum of $90 million on the film after winning the two-week bidding war.

According to The Verge, the film "Bright" is a cop drama set in the human world but this world also has orcs, elves, and other mystical creatures living in it. The teaser did not reveal much information but it suggests that the film will combine realism with fantasy.

The teaser also showed Will Smith wielding a broad sword, working together with an orc, played by Joel Edgerton, who chose a shotgun as his weapon. The film is directed by David Ayer, who also directed "Suicide Squad," and written by Max Landis, writer of "Chronicle" and "American Ultra."

"Bright" centers on a human cop who is forced to work with an Orc to find a weapon that everyone is prepared to kill for. Will Smith's co-stars will be Noomi Repace, Edgar Ramírez, Ike Barinholtz and Kenneth Choi. The Netflix film is slated to release in December on Netflix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix invested a sum of $90 million for the entire package. For Max Landis's script, Netflix paid $3 million, making it one of the largest spec deals for a writer in years. Another $45 million was paid for "Bright's" production, including the talent fees and to buy the film's back ends.

Netflix is limiting the theatrical launch day and date to serve subscribers of the streaming service in countries around the world and to avoid backend residuals. The "Bright" deal is even bigger than the "War Machine," directed by David Michod, by one-third the premium.

The contenders for the "Bright" bidding war include Warner Bros, which teamed up with MGM to pay as much as $50M, all in, and PalmStar's Kevin Frakes, who was initially committed to pay a budget of $40M, Deadline reported.
