A Controversial Painting By A Student At A Capitol Got Taken Down

Artworks such as painting always aim to re-enact something or interpret a certain situation or expression that is currently happening or has happened before. Sometimes, due to the memories inflicted on the events portrayed, these paintings can become too controversial. 

An example of this is the "Untitled #1" by David Pulphus. A painting which was honored by the U.S. Congress for having the most creative expression according to STLAmerican. "An Artistic Discovery" is the name of the art competition who aims to feature artist nationwide coordinated with the members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Aside from having the privilege for your artwork to be displayed on a long tunnel, winners also receive a scholarship.

The "Untitled #1  consist of a busy street with protester rallying for peace. The police depicted on the art are animals wearing a uniform. One is a horse, the other one someone resembles a hippopotamus. Both police are pointing guns at black citizen. A black and white dove is also present on the picture. There is also a man crucified on a weighing scale with Yin and Yang on both side of the spectrum. The painting is said to depict the inequality in modern American Society as reported by CNN

As stated on PBS, the painting was taken down temporarily due to several republicans complaining about it. What they are concern at is the pig in a police uniform aiming gun at a protester. Some lawmakers even argued that it violated some rules in the competition as it shows subjects of political controversy having some gruesome nature.

There was a discussion at House GOP conference meeting wherein the painting was the main subject. Some board members favored removing the painting while some doesn't. Overall, the painting really sparked some controversy depending on how the majority depicts and reflects on it. As of now, it is final that the painting will be temporarily removed. No further announcement were made on when it will be hanged again or made available to the public.
