By Ambili Sasidharan on Jan 26, 2017 08:28 AM EST

Saturday Night Live suspended one of its show writers Katie Rich after posting a tweet, mocking President Trump's youngest son Barron. The now deleted tweet reads, "Barron will be this country's first homeschool shooter." The tweet immediately went viral but Katie was slammed for bring the President's son, who are often considered off limits.

Immediately, Katie issued an apology stating, "I sincerely apologize for the insensitive tweet. I deeply regret my actions & offensive words. It was inexcusable & I'm so sorry." But she was suspended immediately with a termination letter, Time stated in a report. Following this, Katie deleted the post and deactivated her Twitter account.

As The Washington Post opined, despite thousands of people taking to Twitter on Friday to post their own jokes about the inauguration, Rich's tweet was criticized for aiming at his 10-year-old son.

Cosmopolitan quoted a source from SNL saying that Rich has been suspended indefinitely. It also added that a petition on Change.org petition calling for her suspension garnered over 100,000 signatures as of Monday night. Hillary Clinton's daughter Clinton also voiced support, "Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does - to be a kid," she wrote.

However, every coin has two sides, a section of the twitters have come in support of Katie and they are tweeting their opinions using the hashtag #KeepKatieRich. Some of the tweets, as quoted by Cosmopolitan, reads, "She deleted the tweet & apologized sincerely, demonstrating empathy, class & character. She didn't call it locker room talk." "Sincerely confused how the moral rubric for a comedian is stricter than for the president." "Katie Rich made a joke in poor taste and, unlike Drumpf, actually apologized. Don't set a horrible precedent by firing her."

Katie's suspension reminds us of journalist Julia Ioffe who was suspended in December for a tweet about Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump and later apologized.
