‘Dear White People’ Births ‘Boycott Netflix’ Movement on Twitter, Reddit Find Out More Here!
On Wednesday, Netflix released the teaser trailer for the series “Dear White People” – an original series based on the 2014 film of the same title. The 10-episode series, which centers on the life of a group of diverse students at a predominantly white Ivy League University has prompted a corner of America to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, calling the show as anti-white.
A number of Twitter users have posted screenshots of their canceled Netflix subscriptions, with one user calling “Dear White People” a show that “promotes white genocide.” As pointed out by Gizmodo, the movement against “Dear White People” and Netflix has likewise popped up on threads in 4chan and Reddit.
Gizmodo also notes that in this age of American political divisiveness, similar boycotts against Netflix and “Dear White People” have also been urged against companies that apparently stepped on people’s sensibilities through commercials that aired during this past weekend’s Super Bowl broadcast. At /pol/’s Discord chat, people urged others to boycott companies like Kia, Audi, Budweiser and T-Mobile, among others.
“Dear White People” is based on Justin Simien’s 2014 film. The Netflix series stars Logan Browning as Samantha White—a bi-racial student at Winchester. As noted by Variety, White’s radio show “Dear White People” coupled with her book “Ebony and Ivy” led to her popularity as a choice for spokesperson among several black student groups. Meanwhile, Brandon P. Bell reprises his role as Troy Fairbanks—a student looking to become the predominantly white school’s first black student president. The series is produced by Lionsgate and debuts on April 28 with 10 30-minute episodes.
Apart from “Dear White People,” Netflix also announced premier dates for other shows. “Anne,” a new series set in Prince Edward Island in the 1890s premieres on May 12. On Mar. 10, animated kids’ series about a dog racing trucks, “Buddy Thunderstruck,” premieres.
