Previous Owner Still Have The Access On Their Cars; Second Hand Buyers Might On Risk

Charles Henderson, an IBM researcher, discovered a major privacy issue. Henderson still knows the exact control of the car despite selling the car years ago.

According to CNN, Henderson has been conducted a research on the car security to locate and control his car and when he discovered the technique of tracking it, he sold it a year ago. He found the same problems with other four major manufacturers that he tested.

Henderson explained at the RSA security conference in San Francisco how people can still get the access to their car even after they resell them. Manufacturers create applications to control smart cars and features like unlocking the car or finding the location can be easily done by phone.

According to The Verge, Henderson is researching on how to avoid security risks and found out that resetting the car might do the trick. He also observes that the dealerships only authorized to do so and have the ability to see which devices have access to the car and to manually remove a device from it.

Henderson said that revoking access from the vehicle themselves is not that simple. He also gives a set of example on a person with bad intentions who have the access to the vehicle and was able to deny the access of the original owner.

On his research, he suggested that car companies should use a system that requires owner authentication. But the car companies concern is the owners being able to use the system without user error.

The terrifying part is buying a used car but he or she can still access the vehicle without you knowing. That can be also applied to a home with connected devices or any smart appliances all of it can retain the previous owner's data.

Henderson advises that owners should always check the user management on their smart devices to see who has access to their data and devices.
