Despite being far less popular than their brethren under the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella, “Guardians of the Galaxy” went far and beyond initial expectations, managing to become the third-highest grossing movie of 2014, and Marvel’s third-highest grossing film ever. And for an encore, Marvel Studious president Kevin Feige recently claimed that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” will surpass the first film in terms of uniqueness and boldness.

Speaking to reporters recently, Feige touched on a variety of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” related things. “In terms of there’s maybe an easy way and a hard way, but the hard way could be more interesting,” Feige expounded on his claim about the sequel being much unique and daring. The studio head points to “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” director James Gunn’s choice to stick with a Baby Groot character as one of the hard choices the director made for the franchise’s second film.

The plot in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” occurs shortly following the events of the first movie. According to Feige, following the heroes’ victory over Ronan, the Guardians are hired to help a race called Sovereign. That’s when things turn for the worse, as Rocket ends up being at odds with the race’s leader – Ayesha – which prompts her to get bent on eliminating the Guardians.

But according to Gizmodo, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” will not be centering on that conflict, instead focusing on the Guardians themselves. Gunn shares that while the first film is about becoming family, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is about being a family.

Previously, it was revealed that Kurt Russell will be playing Star-Lord’s father. As noted by Entertainment Tonight, another new aspect to the sequel is the presence of a group of villains called The Ravagers. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is scheduled for release on May 5.
