After the White House's statement in connection to the Holocaust became controversial, the Holocaust Museum explained how the bloodiest genocide in history is directed primarily to the Jews. The White House address to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day was met with criticisms as it noticeably discounted the Jewish people as the central victims of the genocide.

Around 6 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust in World War II, although the White House decided not to mention the Jews in their recent statement as other people were also affected by the genocide. However, this move drew flak from the public as the suffering of the Jewish people during the Holocaust was downplayed.

As reported by Time, the Holocaust Museum gave an explanation as to why the International Holocaust Remembrance Day is important in commemorating the Jews who perished during violent Nazi campaign. The statement from the museum was not directed to anyone, although it maintained that the discrimination of the Jews became the driving force of the Holocaust.

"Nazi ideology cast the world as a racial struggle, and the singular focus on the total destruction of every Jewish person was at its racist core," the Holocaust Museum said in their statement. "Millions of other innocent civilians were persecuted and murdered by the Nazis, but the elimination of Jews was central to Nazi policy." In their final note, the Holocaust Museum emphasized the importance of truly understanding history to recognize the Holocaust victims.

The White House defended their position regarding the omission of the Jews in their International Holocaust Remembrance Day statement. Press secretary Sean Spicer expressed his support for US President Donald Trump in recognizing the harrowing events during the Holocaust, the Guardian reported. As for the people criticizing the statement, Spicer described them as "pathetic."

It can be noted that the White House's recent statement regarding the Holocaust is different from those released by the previous administrations. The press office during the time of former US presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama included a special mention of the Jews being the victims of the Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.
