‘Doctor Who’ Search For The 13th Doctor With New Showrunner Chris Chibnall Begins This Year

By Staff Writer on Feb 06, 2017 08:21 AM EST

"Doctor Who" Series 10 has yet to debut this year, but the word is out that next year's season will see some big changes. For one, the BBC series' current showrunner, Steven Moffat, will make his exit by the end of Season 10. Also, the Doctor himself is expected to regenerate once again this season, giving way for another actor to step in as the 13th Doctor.

As reported by Radio Times, Moffat will be replaced by Chris Chibnall for the 11th season of "Doctor Who." Some changes can be expected with a new writer taking over the show, although he will perform the usual duties of a showrunner. Among his duties will be supervising the search for the next Doctor. Chibnall taking over Moffat's position won't take effect until Season 11 in 2018, but he will be leading the selection of the new Time Lord mid-2016. By this year's autumn, the selection process is expected to be finished.

When an actor is finally chosen to play the 13th Doctor, Chibnall and the rest of the production will start filming in the early months of 2018. The target premiere of "Doctor Who" Series 11 will be around Fall next year. Meanwhile, the upcoming Season 10 will star Peter Capaldi as the current Time Lord, as well as the new Doctor's companion, Bill (Pearl Mackie). Capaldi himself teased that the previous companion, Clara (Jenna Coleman), might have a special appearance in Series 10, Screen Crush reported.

Capaldi recently announced his forthcoming departure in "Doctor Who," which will take effect by the end of Series 10. In an interview with BBC, the 58-year-old actor revealed that he is saddened to leave such a great show, but it is probably the right timing for him "to move on." To note, Capaldi took over the role of the Doctor in Series 8 back in 2013.

Nevertheless, Capaldi is on to finish filming all of the 12th Doctor's remaining episodes. Following his announcement last week, the actor was seen shooting a scene for "Doctor Who" Series 10 last Sunday. As reported by Daily Mail, the actor is working on a scene with the Doctor's companions, Bill and Nardole (Matt Lucas).

More exciting twists and turns are expected before the Doctor undergoes another regeneration phase in this year's Christmas special. "Doctor Who" Series 10 will premiere on April 15.
